Literature Text

I pass a man repairing a wall,
coating its outside with a layer of wet cement.
The cracks seem to whisper of future degeneration.
But all that matters is that no one can see the gouges or careless scrapes and scratches.
Just cover up enough so we can forget and go back to business as usual.

It's been only a short while since 9-11, when people wailed in the street.
Distant people ran from the falling titans, covered in gray cement.
I didn't know anyone there,
but I wept with them.

It's been only a little while,
and I can feel that man scraping over me
–Shuck, Shuck–
until I look like those people
and I feel like that wall.
The Boy Scouts in my area put flags up for every holiday, and today, as I looked at the red, white, and blue fluttering in the wind, I thought about what happened 11 years ago.

I was riding the bus to my university when one student announced that "someone has hit the Towers". I didn't know what he meant b/c I didn't know what "the Towers" meant. Where were they? My friend quickly informed me, and I immediately thought "What on earth was that pilot doing? Those are huge and it would be impossible to run into them unless something..." and just as I had that thought, the same student informed all of us that another plane had been flown into the second tower.

This bus ride was usually jovial and students often would chatter about everything and nothing at all. The silence on that bus was soul-crushingly eerie.

Then he announced that it might be a terrorist attack, and several of us started weeping. I joined them but I also thought, "We're going to go to war...and we don't even know who our enemy is."

I'd like to share my feelings and thoughts about the whole thing with this poem.

This is so beautiful... It perfectly captures the feelings that we feel every year when 9/11 comes around.
